NPAs disarm CVOs in Sarangani

ALABEL, Sarangani (November 27) – Some 40 communist rebels swoop a remote village in Malapatan on Thursday morning and disarmed members of the civilian volunteer organization of their firearms, according to police authorities here.

Sarangani provincial police director Senior Supt. Danilo Peralta said the CVO member in Barangay Kinam were caught by surprise by New People’s Army rebels who reportedly carted away eight shotguns, a Carbine, and a Garand rifle after the incident.

The rebels were reportedly led by a certain Kumander Yoyong of the NPA’s Front 71 guerrilla unit.

Peralta said both the police and military have already sent reinforcements and investigators to look into the incident.

Inatake ng NPA ‘yung cooperative duon (The NPAs attacked the cooperative in the area),” Peralta said.

He said they are yet to receive feedback from police operatives who were immediately sent to Barangay Kinam to investigate the first major tactical offensive launched by the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in the province this year.

It also came a month before the CPP observes its 40th founding anniversary.

The CPP was established on December 26, 1968 by a handful of intellectuals and members of the old Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas.

Its founding chairman was Jose Maria Sison who is now living in self-exile in The Netherlands.

Nobody was hurt during the incident which came on the day Vice President Noli de Castro arrived in Sarangani to grace the opening of the 6th Annual Munato Festival in the province.

Barangay Kinam is a former rebel stronghold of the NPA.

Several years ago, the Philippine Army announced that it has neutralized the rebel group operating in the area by facilitating the surrender of alleged NPA regulars and sympathizers.

Sarangani governor Miguel Rene Dominguez has built a farm to market road immediately after the reported NPA sympathizers surrendered to the government.
